Yamakoshi Village (now integrated
with Nagaoka City) is a famous village for their fancy carp production. The
fish have been bringing a big chunk of money into this small community. The population
of the district was about 2,000 before they merged with Nagaoka City in 2005,
but most of the residents had (still have) decent income.
Their other tourist attractions
are beautiful landscape with terraced rice fields and bullfights (not like
Spain, bull vs bull style in Yamakoshi).
Although the Chūetsu Earthquake
(see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_Ch%C5%ABetsu_earthquake)
gave the
village a lot of damage in 2004, they have recovered from the disaster. The area
still keeps the landscape of old-time Japan.
